Using Videos to Deliver Impactful Learning

Binge watching is a trend. With Netflix, Amazon Prime and other sites providing access to various seasons of TV shows, the working class today binge watches during weekends. But, the primary reason to do so, is the fact that videos tend to keep them engaged. And if we look at it closely, ‘How-To’ videos are often the go to place for common issues, who reads manuals anyways?

Doesn’t come as a surprise that learning videos have found its niche too. We have discussed about the connect between micro learning and videos,  about the styles of video-based learning to be used in eLearning design, and about the things to focus on while creating eLearning videos. In a similar note let’s take a look at how to use videos to deliver impactful learning.

But, before we get there, what exactly is the impact we are aiming at?

In general, impactful learning is about how well the learners attain the knowledge. Research has often pointed out that learners understand and remember even complex learning concepts better with the help of visual explanation videos. So, how do we leverage videos to deliver impactful learning?

Flipped Classroom

Salman Khan in 'Let's use video to reinvent education' describes the transformative way video can impact on teaching and learning and encourages teachers to consider the flipped classroom model where learners can digest lecture content at their pace and explore content more deeply during class time. Well-designed videos can relay a lot of information in a short time without overwhelming the learners. In some cases, it can also be used to build curiosity so that the rest of the learning is more self-driven.

Impactful Training Retention

Certain topics, certain concepts are better learned through visual explanations, say for instance the assembling of a machine, how to do videos, etc. Videos often do a better job at communicating facts or demonstrating procedures to assist the learners in mastering things too. In addition, adding an interactive component can make the participation more active and engaging

Assistive, Supportive Learning

Researchers have often pointed out the connection between visual clues, the memory process, and knowledge retention. Videos are hence, great tools when it comes to assistance or on-job-support. Augmented reality-based learning too leverages this property of videos.

According to Willmot et al (2012), evidence points out that digital video reporting can inspire and engage learners when incorporated into learner-centered learning activities through:

  • increased motivation
  • enhanced learning experience
  • higher marks
  • development potential for deeper learning of the subject development potential for deeper learning
  • development of learner autonomy
  • enhanced team working and communication skills
  • a source of evidence relating to skills for interviews
  • learning resources for future cohorts to use

Bit Size Delivery

Compared to regular eLearning videos can be delivered in the form of a small nugget size learning which can be accessed anytime, anywhere on the go through mobile. It offers the flexibility for the learner to learn on the go.

Videos also promote collaborative learning, problem solving, technological and organizational skills, inspire and engage learners, and encourage them to explore more.
